Retro Modern Lucha Libre

So in a few moments of free time I had a while ago, as a Lucha Libre fan and in a rather similar way that my idea of the lucha libre hall of fame came up, I thought of things that I would change in contemporary lucha libre. This is the best thing that I could think of.

In the last years there has been a recurrent trend in many fields, which is to apply the idea of retro in those areas or in some cases combine it with the current tendency. In clothing, cars and advertising.

Taking the definition behind retro and applying it to lucha libre, why not bring back some things that disappear through out the years. There isn't that much really, since lucha libre keeps some elements of its first days. But imagine of a new version of Murcielago Velazquez, a luchador that would induce fear to the audience during his presentation by throwing live bats at them... ok no, in these days I'm pretty sure that PETA or Greenpeace wouldn't approve of that idea.

Something that I don't like about today's lucha libre is the way they assign the challengers for a championship match and really it isn't very helpful at least in CMLL's case, that have 19 titles

I must say that this idea came to me when I was watching an interview if El Satanico. Apply a monthly classification to define the challenger for each belt. How would that work? Very simple (or at least it doesn't sound that complicated in my mind), book a series of one on one matches and luchador that wins a match, climbs up a place in the chart. By the end of the month, the luchador that is on top of the board earns a championship match.

Nowadays a one on one match is a rare thing in lucha libre, so it would be kind of awesome to see these type of bouts.

And this is all for this week, I'll see you next Tuesday.
