So, today I wanted to write something dedicated to El Santo, since last Wednesday marked the 30th anniversary of his passing. Really there is nothing new I can say about him. I wanted to review and share one of his movies with you, but the few films I found online didn’t have any English subtitles. My plan B was to talk about one of his bouts, but apparently in this day and age, to encounter with a complete match from El Santo on the Internet is asking too much, even though you can locate full Rikidözan fights from the 50’s on youtube.
The next best thing I came up to pay tribute to one of the greatest luchadores in history was with a match of his son, El Hijo del Santo.
In Mexico his son is very criticized on the way he has managed the rights to the name and image of El Santo, he is quite strict, not very kind to parodies and multiple dvd versions of any movie that his father got to star.
But in the fighting aspect, he has done an awesome job in making and keeping a good reputation as El Santo’s son and building his own path in lucha libre. Also he’s one of the few luchadores that has an old school style of wrestling, instead of the high flying that is very common these days.
I want to keep this short, so today I have for you one of his best matches, this one is from September 19th 1997, as part of the show planned for the 64th anniversary of CMLL, El Hijo del Santo fought El Negro Casas in a Mask vs Hair match. Really good bout, El Hijo del Santo shows a aggressive side that is not seen very often. Anyway, hope you enjoy it. I’ll see you next week.
